Minen und Bergbau - Hemlo Mine 2020

The complete installation: the rockfall barrier in the background (middle), underneath the stabilized rockface (TECCO® mesh), two attenuators at the sides

Minen und Bergbau - Hemlo Mine 2020

Interception part of one of the customized attenuators: the rigid posts permit the absence of retaining ropes, leaving the berm free to access, example for maintenance works.

Ausgangslage

Hemlo has produced more than 21 million ounces of gold and has been operating continuously for more than 30 years. It consists of the Williams mine — an underground and open pit operation — located about 350 kilometers east of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Potential rockfall hazards at the tunnel portal led the mine to contact Geobrugg NA LLC. for advice on mitigation solutions.

GeoStabilization International (GSI) chose an attenuator solution as the most efficient and cost-effective for open pit mining.

Massnahme

Geobrugg worked closely with the mine and the installation contractor GeoStabilization International (GSI) to manage the rockfall hazards.

The works consist of:

  • two attenuators totaling 70 meters of MINAX® 80/4 mesh
  • one GBE-1000A-R kJ barrier
  • one anchored TECCO® G65/3 mesh system.

During the installation of the different solutions, all mining activities continued with no interruption.
