Ausgangslage

In 2016, the Baku City Circuit hosted the European Grand Prix for the first time. Since then, the race in Azerbaijan’s capital has been part of the Formula 1 racing calendar.

With over six kilometers, the temporary street circuit is one of the longest tracks on the current Formula 1 racing calendar.

As a standard, City Circuits are installed for the event and dismantled after the event. The installation and dismantling process might lead to disruption in traffic and daily life of the local residents which needs to be minimized as much as possible.

Baku City Circuit contacted Geobrugg in early 2024 to request replacing the existing solution, with the aim of reducing traffic disruption and increasing installation speed.

Massnahme

Together with Baku City Circuit Geobrugg Motorsport, the best solution for the different areas of concern was evaluated. At Neftchilar Ave, a special double-sided barrier has been used. It required annual asphalt work before installation and after removal. The difficult installation process led to massive traffic disruption, which must be minimized.

Geobrugg proposed their mobile debris fence (mDF350-3) in a back-to-back configuration. The concrete barriers will be placed on the asphalt, eliminating the need for asphalt works. In addition, the client preinstalled the debris fence panels on the concrete barrier for installation.

The installation of around 1 kilometer of barriers and debris fence was completed within two days, and the entire system was removed in just one day. The client and the city authorities are very pleased, as all goals have been achieved.
