Initial situation

The Rhaetian Railway periodically clears rocks from the western portal of the Brombänztunnel I in Davos Wiesen. During rock clearance in 2021, various loose stones and boulders were discovered, along with stacked, separated fissures. During the clearance work, it was also observed that the portal had been obstructed by loose stones and boulders that had fallen onto the railway track.

A risk assessment analyzing the condition of the rock face and evaluating potential risks, as well as a geological assessment, revealed that rock clearance is not a sufficient long-term protective measure due to the various rocks and boulders at risk of falling in the medium to long term and the danger of these falling over the tunnel portal.

Description

As recommended, a rockfall protection net was installed above the west portal of the Brombänztunnel I as an economical, practical, and sustainable solution.

Due to the limited length, a single-field system was chosen. As several blocks can fall simultaneously, a rockfall protection net with an energy absorption capacity of at least 1,000 kJ and a height of five meters was installed.
