A1 Highway Pyrzowice-Piekary Śląskie

Slope Stability - A1 Highway Pyrzowice-Piekary Śląskie 2011

Deep cut along the A1 Highway between Pyrzowice and Piekary Śląskie - nailing and flexible facing using TECCO® SYSTEM³ ensure safety and a natural look

Slope Stability - A1 Highway Pyrzowice-Piekary Śląskie 2011

For the cuts along the highway the top down method with benching was applied. The benches were subsequently nailed and covered with TECCO® SYSTEM³

To make the nailing as efficient as possible, some subcontractors used drill rigs installed on an excavator. This allowed drilling works flexibility

To allow optimal TECCO® SYSTEM³ pre-tensioning, nails were cut to the slope face and dells around were prepared

TECCO® SYSTEM³ partially installed - the pre-tensioning minimises the risk of further slope deformations

Directly after nailing slope facing application, an extra layer of humus was applied to support further greening

Slope Stability - A1 Highway Pyrzowice-Piekary Śląskie 2011

Thanks to the applied solutions, the greening came very fast and required only seeding

Closer look on the fully stabilized slopes - TECCO® SYSTEM³ is nearly invisible and allows fast greening

Stabilized cut - thanks to the applied solutions, the slopes maintain their natural look

Year of installation

2011

Initial situation

The Polish A1 highway connecting Poland from south to north leads through Silesia. Because of the morphology of the terrain, deep cuts were required. Due to geological conditions and also due to the fact that this area is strongly influenced by the hard coal mining activity, slope stabilization was a must.

Geology

Marls, silts, sandstones and limestones.

Description

For the following reasons designers together with the Polish National Roads selected TECCO® System as a stabilizing solution:

  •  complicated ground conditions – about 12 geotechnical layers were described, only 4 of these were rocks and all others soil in different compositions
  • there was an apprehension that after digging and taking off such mass of material, there will be a release of the energy and consequently, the slopes will be prone to collapse - which is quite common especially for such high slopes
  • the system can be designed and dimensioned against superficial instabilities which offer the possibility to arrange the nails in a more economical way due to the capability of TECCO® System  mesh in absorbing and transferring high loads
  • when slopes stabilized with TECCO® System are combined with anti-erosion mats, they can regain a natural or vegetated appearance, which is aesthetically preferred.

TECCO® System was designed to protect local instabilities of soil and rock masses. This worked perfectly, as first visible small movements occurred which were stopped by the TECCO® System mesh shortly after installation.
