Excess vegetation must be routinely removed so roots cannot cause increasing amount of pressure and trigger instability in the slope.

Initial situation

Some 50 years ago State Road 2127 was widened to accommodate increased traffic volume. Sections of rock face adjacent to the roadway required scaling. The material that was removed was reused as part of the pavement. Because of the stability of the local rock, no protection measures were required.

As a consequence of being moderately to heavily saturated over the past 20 years, crevices in the rock fragments have expanded, in most parts by over one meter. The crevices bisect the steep rock face nearly vertically and caused several rockfall incidents in 2014.

The Bavarian Agency for Environment decided to install several single-block stabilization systems. Further actions have not been planned due to costs and environmental protection.

Geology

Quartz / Slate

Description

During rock scaling, those rocks with a volume of up to 6 m³ were removed. Critical sections with reduced stability are now being stabilized with the SPIDER® and TECCO® protection systems.
