Initial situation

Due to recent bad weather, there became a hazard of chalk blocks coming loose from the slope above and falling onto the zig-zagging footpath below. The footpath provides the only point of access for crossing the existing railway (directly south) to Shakespeare Beach, and it was key that the route was made safe for public use.

Geology

New Pit Chalk Formation - a chalk of the Cretaceous Period.

Description

Following a visit to the site in October 2020, we worked with the contractor, South East Abseiling, to find an appropriate solution for the problem. Due to the site’s proximity to the sea, a stainless steel mesh was recommended to ensure the highest degree of corrosion protection.

We supplied TECCO STAINLESS G65/3 and TECMAT and stainless steel P33/40 spike plates to ensure stablisation and revegetation of the existing slope. We maintained close contact with the contractor during the works, always on hand to answer technical queries related to installation and performance of our system. In particular, we advised the appropriate method of installation for TECMAT beneath TECCO STAINLESS G65/3 to ensure there was no contamination and subsequent degradation of the corrosion protection provided by the stainless steel mesh.
The result was a tidy installation and successful slope stablisation. A follow-up site visit was undertaken in October 2021, showing beginning revegetation.
