The TITLIS Tower stands at an altitude of over 3,000 meters. The tower’s base houses the parking garage for the vehicle fleet. According to a study by the SLF (Swiss Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research), falling ice fragments must be expected on the north side due to potential ice formation on the tower’s structure. A solution was sought to reliably protect the access road and the machinery hall entrance area without visually compromising the tower’s architecture.
To protect people, vehicles, and machinery, a compact, highly effective protective fence measuring 18 m in length and 2.6 m in height was installed. The system can withstand high wind loads, even when the mesh is completely iced over. At the same time, it can safely retain falling ice fragments.
The design is based on Geobrugg’s many years of experience in dealing with dynamic loads. Insights from proven solutions in motorsports and natural hazard protection were incorporated into the development of this project-specific solution.
