Initial situation

On the Norwegian island Sørøya, the main road from Hasvik to Sørvær was threatened by rockfall in the summertime and avalanches during the winter. The road construction authorities decided to undertake sustainable measures to mitigate these hazards for this important road. As the starting zone of the avalanche is situated approximately 200 meters above the route, the installation of the protection system had to be carried out by helicopter.

At this site GUARD monitoring devices are installed as well, read about this installation from 2020.

Description

The construction company DS Entreprenør AS was commissioned by the Norwegian road construction authorities to evaluate possible solutions. Fjerby decided to install approximately 1400 meters (Dk 3.5) of the Geobrugg SPIDER® Avalanche system. This solution provides rockfall protection with energies up to 500 kJ in the summer as well as avalanche prevention in winter. SPIDER® Avalanche is also hardly visible, which is especially fundamental in the untouched nature of the island Sørøya.
