Initial situation

Three sites within the Karehana Bay Scenic Reserve located in Karehana Bay, Plimmerton, experienced debris flows following heavy rainfall on 29 November 2020. ENGEO completed an assessment of the three sites and concluded that a significant debris flow hazard is present and that mitigation solutions need to be implemented to reduce the risk to life safety to an acceptable level.

Description

Geobrugg VX100 debris flow barriers were installed at the three debris flow locations. The barriers are 5 metres high and have top rope spans of 15 to 21 metres. The system withstands impact pressures up to 100 kN per m²

A secondary mesh was used for aperture control. The high-tensile ring mesh and ropes cause minimal visual pollution and were constructed with minimal environmental pollution or disturbance.

The barriers are designed and tested according to EAD-340020-00-0106-Flexible kits for retaining debris flows and shallow landslides.
