A forensic psychiatric center required construciton of an outdoor walk area. High architectural demands were imposed for light permeability and transparency. The most stringent of security standards made it necessary to include special requirements for a ”humane” design with secure escape protection. It had to have a high resistance to cutting and the ability to prevent the passing of drugs, mobile phones and objects to assist an escape. Additionally, inmates had to be prevented from inflicting self-harm.
The new building is single story with cutout patterned courtyards. The main areas of use, organized on one level, guarantees security. An environment was created, optimal for operating activities and appropriate for therapy. Also provided are three stations and living accommodations for patients. They are situated around three garden courtyards. The patients are free to walk inside the arched wire mesh walkway throughout the day. The ROMBO G65/4 high-tensile steel wire mesh guarantees protection against break-outs. Small secondary mesh prevents the walkway from being penetrated by objects.
Three arcades consisting of a special mesh, cannot be bent and is very difficult to cut. Special caps at critical ends prevent the possibility for self-harm. The secondary mesh also restricts objects from being thrown over.
