The second international conference on natural hazards and infrastructure will build upon the encouragement received during ICONHIC2016 aiming to make the extra mile towards Infrastructure Resilience. It is currently well understood that protection against extreme events is not served by the “stronger is better” principle. Apart from several scientific evidence disproving the adequacy of such a concept, building stronger structures has no impact in protecting existing infrastructure. On the contrary, the latter is asked to serve more needs stemming from the expansion of populations in urbanized regions, at a time when ageing reduces its capacity. Further to that, both the frequency and intensity of extreme natural events are augmenting.
Although it is essential to act now, it is obvious that no single discipline can undertake the action. That is why ICONHIC2019 aims to bring all stakeholders on the same floor. We need to work together and understand each other. Engineers, financers, insurers, and policy makers must exchange experience in order to set a robust and viable trace towards our future actions.
To achieve this goal, the conference will include panel discussions among different stakeholders, excellent keynote lectures - including our very own Corinna Wendeler - special and theme sessions in a very lively event encouraging discussion on challenging topics.
We are looking forward to meeting you at our booth at the ICONHIC2019 in Greece on 23-26 June 2019!

The Pipelines 2019 Conference will be held in Music City USA, starting Sunday, July 21, 2019 through Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel in downtown Nashville, Tennessee, USA.
The Pipelines Division seeks to advance scientific knowledge and engineering practice related to the conveyance of materials through pipelines by promoting leading edge projects and practices. The program includes specialty workshops, concurrent technical sessions, an exposition, plenary sessions, and special events.
Concepts in Harmony is not only the theme this year, but a challenge to all of us to be ever diligent in understanding and communicating the role in managing the built and natural environment. Pipeline projects require a diverse understanding, and when done well, achieve infrastructure harmony. Conversely, when done poorly, unacceptable outcomes can occur. This conference is unique to the world in bringing together the premier expertise in the Pipeline Engineering field. From engineers to surveyors, seasoned to young members, experts to the novice, everyone will walk away from this conference having learned something new.
We look forward to meeting you at the Pipelines 2019 Conference in Nashville.

2019 will be a special year for the ISRM South America National Groups when the region welcomes the ISRM family for its 14th Congress. Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay will be the host countries for the event that is to be held in Foz do Iguassu, city that marks the common border amongst these countries. It is an honor to organize such a venue but it is also a great responsibility to maintain the tradition of memorable ISRM congresses.
The central theme of the Congress is Rock Mechanics for Natural Resources and Infrastructure Development, a theme much relevant and needed for the current stage of most of the countries. All ISRM regions are invited to share their experience in the theme. The technical programme is being established by an International Scientific Committee in order to attract different categories of geotechnical professionals as academics, consultants, contractors, public companies and should incorporate issues of ISRM Technical Commissions.

It is essential that Wales has cutting edge transport links to move people to jobs, encourage investment and help grow our economy. Moreover, it is important that future investment provides visible and practical improvements to the rail travel experience on a franchise with the potential to grow transport links between England and Wales. With the franchising powers we are devolving to the Welsh Government, the UK Government has delivered on a key recommendation made by Sir Paul Silk’s Commission on Devolution in Wales. We now look to the Welsh Government to deliver on our joint ambitions to improve connectivity, cut journey times and create a transport infrastructure that is fit for the future.”
This one day conference will bring the leaders from the region together to discuss the STrIDe framework, the new Wales and Borders franchise, investing in good design, new technology and innovation, funding and investment, the skills shortage and how we are going to align apprenticeship programmes to fit the needs of the sector.
