Rockfall Protection - Haraz Road AbAli 2012

The barriers protect the road against rockfalls. Six RXI-500 barriers which can absorb up to 5000 kJ were installed on the site totaling 518 meters with post heights ranging from 6.5 to 8.5 meters. Additionally: RXI-300 (3000 kJ, 70 meters long) and an RXI-200 (2000 kJ, 54 meters long). Slope stabilization with TECCO® G65/3. In total, about 10,200 square meters of slope stabilization and drapery systems were installed on the site.

Initial situation

Haraz is a major route connecting Tehran to the Northen cities in Mazandaran province by the Caspian Sea. As Haraz connects Tehran to the Northern part of Iran, it has to go through Alborz mountains. Along the road, there are many areas with rockfall incidents or slope instabilities.

In AbAli area, the situation was much worse. Massive rockfalls occurred over the course of the years which caused significant damages. Traffic was also increasing year over year and the need to extend the current road & protect it against hazards was a high priority.

Tehran RMTO (Road Maintenance & Transportation Office) considered various solutions in order to stabilize the current situation. Knowing that the road extension project was also in the works, using traditional protection measures such as concrete gallery was in question as it was both very costly and road closures were required.

Description

In order to identify the riskiest areas, specialists from Geobrugg and Geotech executed a detailed study of all hazards. Rockfall barriers and slope stabilization solutions were developed for each specific area in order to protect the road. (The road was also extended from two lanes to five lanes.)

The protected area was about 650 meters long. A total of eight rockfall barriers with highest energy class of 5000 kJ were installed. Back in 2012 this project definitely set a record in the Middle East - and worldwide!
