Situation de départ

The project location in Himachal Pradesh, India, lies approximately 40 kilometers east of Kalpa. In 2019, the powerhouse below the cliff was still under construction. By 2024, however, it was fully operational, with sophisticated equipment installed within and on top. Ensuring the prevention of rockfalls during slope stabilization work was critical, as the area was narrower compared to previous work. Dead trees on the vertical edges of the cliff added to the project’s complexity, requiring careful negotiation. Design and technological modifications were necessary at every step. Rockfalls have been observed in the SST-UAT area of the powerhouse, prompting the customer to request a barrier solution for this specific location.

Description

The site required a cost-effective protection system to stabilize the problematic slope and safeguard the powerhouse area permanently. The chosen solution needed to address several challenges: an almost vertically unstable slope with limited accessibility, complex geological conditions, and strict installation time constraints. The client entrusted us with the full responsibility for designing, supplying, and installing the solution.

The client relied on the previously installed flexible slope stabilization system, which utilized QUAROX® 0.3/6.5/275 rolled cable net with Geobrugg SUPERCOATING and high tensile rockfall protection netting DELTAX® G80/2 (secondary mesh)—total area 3500 square meters.  The installation included a variable grid pattern and fully grouted rock bolts with a diameter of 32 mm and a length of 3 meters.

Additionally, an RXE-500 rockfall barrier line of 30 meters, with a post height of 4 metes capable of absorbing impact energies up to 500 kJ, was installed in the SST-UAT area to protect both men and machinery.
