At a length of 4.3 kilometres, it ranks among the shorter circuits on the F1 calendar: hardly anywhere else, drivers zoom past the race fans that often! Here, you won’t find seemingly endless asphalt-covered run-areas, only merciless gravel beds. Drivers pay the price for even the tiniest mistake made on the track. The highly challenging circuit features 14 corners and will be fully upgraded to meet the highest standard while maintaining the unique character that makes Circuit Zandvoort stand out. An important part of the extensive upgrade of the facility was to improve safety to meet the new standards. Existing barriers and debris fences had to be replaced to meet the new requirements set by the FIA Standard 3502-2018 Debris Fence.
Working in close cooperation with DROMO circuit design, we prepared the construction execution design. It included next to the Geobrugg Debris Fence, mobile Debris Fence, and Marshal Posts unique challenges such as a mobile debris fence in a banked section, a gate in a permanent debris fence, new gate solutions for our mobile debris fence system in accordance to the new FIA recommendation and others.
Geobrugg manufactured, delivered and installed all solutions together with our partners Geo Benelux, NORDBETON GmbH and Zaunsysteme Weyrauch GmbH.
In record speed of fewer than five months, the complete circuit upgrade was completed. The finishing touches happened during Formula 1 race week to make sure that the camera openings and photographer openings are installed in the correct location. And to the satisfaction of all parties involved.
For an impression of the new Zandvoort 2020, we share a video of Jorg de Bruijn on YouTube.
