In Soreq Valley near Bet Shemesh, the old railway line from Jaffa to Jerusalem opened in 1892, winds up through the valley towards Jerusalem. On a distance of 30 km, the train climbs 500 m height difference. Frequent rockfall from the surrounding cliffs endangered the operation of the railway in the narrow valley.
The site has been intensively investigated to analyze the occurring natural hazards. For the most endangered sections, rockfall simulations served to determine the necessary rockfall barrier types to protect the passing trains.
