Slopes above a railway tunnel portal in Northchurch, Berkhamsted, had shown signs of instability. As part of the West Coast Main Line, this railway is a critical piece of infrastructure for both passengers and freight trains alike.
Tony Gee & Partners Consulting Engineers acted as the designers for the remediation of the ongoing slope instability, whilst BAM Ritchies were the contractors appointed to install the final solution.
Holywell Nodular Chalk Formation and New Pit Chalk Formation
The chosen design involved a rock-bolted solution of R-32 hollow bar between 8 - 10 meters long with over 730 rock bolts used across the site, which spanned from above the tunnel portal around to the northern side of the cutting and then eastwards.
TECCO G45/2 was chosen as the right facing to stabilize the superficial instability.
BAM Ritchies used rope access techniques to install erosion control matting first, followed by TECCO G45/2.
Geobrugg worked with Tony Gee & BAM Ritchies to ensure design and installation of the TECCO system was appropriate and simple.
