San Alfonso, located at the brim of the metropolitan area of Santiago de Chile, is affected by landslides every year. Due to climate change and different atmospheric rivers that have affected the region in recent years, these events have become more common and recurrent. In 2021 and 2022, the Ministry of Public Works requested to install ten barriers distributed in five streams that flow into the town of San Alfonso to mitigate these risks.
Due to climatic events in 2023, an emergency contract was signed for the disassembly, cleaning, reinstallation and application of an erosion control system to improve the capacity and lifetime of three existing barriers in one of the most affected streams. Five additional barriers will allow hydrological correction, smoothing the river bank and helping to retain extra material.
