The B104 road in Baie du Cap consists of several dangerous curves with mountain vertical slopes on one side over 25 metres high and ravines on the other side. The road is about six metres wide with enlargement at the curves and viewpoints. This road is the major link between the western Coast and the Central Plateau.
Over the years, the road has deteriorated because of storm water drain paths, causing instability and settlement on the road edges and creating bulging of the masonry retaining walls because of slip panes. Severe deterioration along 1200 metres of road has been noted.
The site required a cost-effective protection system, one that actively and permanently stabilizes the problematic slope. The applied protection system must further consider the troublesome site conditions: an almost vertically unstable slope with very limited accessibility, challenging geological conditions, intense rainfalls, and several installation time constraints. The decision fell on a technology, that respects the challenging site conditions and at the same time blends with nature: The TECCO system, utilizing a flexible facing with a nailed solution.
The high-tensile steel wire mesh is installed from the top, and rolled down the slope and pre-tensioned via the spike plates and the soil nails onto the slope.
