This halfmoon shaped island group, popular with tourists, located in Greece, is in the Aegean Sea, about 120 km north of Kreta. The village of Oia is situated in the west, high up at the edge of the crater rim, Caldera. In peak season, the breathtaking views from the crater rim can attract up to 2.000 tourists per day. Visitors walk the footpath from the pier up to Oia. This foothpath was subject to rockfall coming from basalt outcrops.
Slopes were partially stabilized using TECCO® SYSTEM3 and SPIDER® System.
After rockfalls visible already in winter 2010, a fatal accident happened in summer 2011. This incident triggered installation of protection measures in Oia Village including the removal of a rock pinnacle and the installation of type GBE rockfall barriers.
