The municipality of Morgex in the Aosta Valley is notorious for its high risk of avalanches, especially the Lavanchers site. At risk are some important road and rail infrastructures for connections between the municipality and neighboring towns.
After a tragic avalanche event in February 1999, we were commissioned to construct 4350 linear meters of snow barriers with Dk 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 at an elevation of about 2850 meters.
The snow masses accumulated over the years on the slope have caused wear and tear of some of the basic components of the barriers. For this reason, the Autonomous Region of Valle d' Aosta commissioned the BGP Mountain Scarl Consortium to carry out extraordinary maintenance and restoration operations.
The latter made use of our technologies to accomplish the task in the best possible way.
In particular, the following work was followed:
- new anchorages to replace those most stressed
- repositioning and realignment of the uprights and floating plates was carried out
- additional reinforcing ropes were inserted in the internal alignments
- damaged structural elements (ropes, clamps and shackles) were replaced
Thanks to these interventions, the snow barrier system has regained full efficiency and will be able to continue to ensure the protection of the population, settlements and infrastructure on the valley floor.
The experience of Lavanchers represents only the beginning for us at Geobrugg. In fact, we have already developed a new system for monitoring and are trying to promote standardized maintenance procedures.
