In the Swiss region Bernese Oberland, severe storms caused devastating destruction in the residential area, resulting in tragic loss as well as extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure. As part of a large-scale effort to protect Merligen, Canton of Bern from periodic flooding, the Groenbach creek was equipped with a debris flow protection system.
Above the protection system there is a manmade retention area with a total capacity of approximately 12,000 m³ of debris and driftwood. The lower end of the area is enclosed by a debris flow barrier that is designed to retain solids but lets high water and small debris pass through.
In August 2024, the sediment retention solution prevented more severe damage following extremely heavy rainfall.
Despite the heavy load, the barrier showed no signs of damage. It was cleared; only the shackles and wire rope clamps were retightened.
