The rock slope cut for the construction of the A40 road was through the Brownstones formation. This is described as thickly bedded moderately weathered sandstone and thinly bedded highly weathered and less competent siltstone and mudstone. The slope angle is between 35 degrees and 75 degrees (average of approximately 45 degrees). Bedding and fractures have created blocks of varying size on the rock slope. The largest block size was approximately 0.75 m³. Energies of the falling block were estimated to be in the range of 30-35 kJ.
Geobrugg assisted with the rockfall modelling and then recomended the use of GBE-100A-R rockfall barrier (for 100 kJ). The GBE-100A-R provides the required energy capacity with minimal deflection. This was a key consideration as the fence is close to the road. For this project the client chose to paint the fence posts black.
