Mountain passes are some of the more challenging parts of the road network to maintain. They are regularly inspected for stability and these assessments guide requirements for maintenance. Heavy rains in early autumn resulted in landslips on the aged granite slopes of Brown Mountain, resulting in natural material including huge boulders to fall onto the travel lanes.
A $2.2 million slope stabilisation project at this location started in mid-April to remove selected boulders, trees and unstable natural material. The area will also receive treatments that include installing soil nails into the slopes which are then tightened against the slope with steel mesh and erosion matting for support to prevent further slips and erosion. Important road maintenance will also be completed.
