After a 2012 rockslide where boulders up to 10 feet in diameter rained down on parked cars, the City of San Francisco hired the Geotechnical Engineering firm Cotton, Shires & Associates, Inc. (CSA) to design rockfall mitigation. CSA worked with Geobrugg and designed a GBE-500A barrier and a GBE-500AR barrier for mitigating the hazard.
The contractor, GeoStabilization International, is currently performing rock/slope repair, rock excavation and hauling, and slope stabilization along the Telegraph Hill rock slope on the east side of the cliff at Lombard Street, below Coit Tower. The purpose is to improve the safety and stability of the hillside and reduce the potential for future rockslides. Crews will start by scraping and hauling off loose rocks and vegetation from the hillside, then will install dozens of sturdy rock anchors and install the GBE-500A and GBE-500AR systems. This is a unique project to protect the historic neighborhood and popular lookout.
