Situação inicial

Skagway is a small coastal city in southeast Alaska that became a gateway to the Klondike during the 1896 gold rush. Skagway is now a popular cruise ship destination and launching point for the historic narrow-gauge railroad between Skagway and White Pass Summit, which is a touristic attraction. The cruise ship dock and railroad are located at the base of the steep hills forming the fjord where there are two very active rockfall chutes.

Descrição

Various rockfall protection measures have been installed at this site over the past 20 years, including cable net draped attenuators, a rockfall barrier, and a modern rockfall attenuator utilizing SPIDER S4-130 as the structural mesh. The latest installation is an RXE-8000 (8,000 kJ).

Challenges included anchorage and support ropes crossing an active rockfall chute and a tall launching cliff directly above the barrier, requiring elevated post-base supports (foundations).
