Beesands is a small settlement located midway between Hallsands and Torcross on the coast of Start Bay in South Devon, The picturesque area is a tourist hotspot. Unfortunately it is prone to coastal erosion during storm season and high tides.
Riprap had been built to defend the coastline but required costly annual maintenance. The project manager, therefore, contacted Geobrugg in search of an innovative and cost-effective solution.
Working closely with Landmarc to find an alternative coastal erosion solution that requires less maintenance than rock armour and geotextiles. Using TECCO® Stainless G65/3 to wrap and secure multiple-sized rocks to match the beach profile. High-tensile TECCO® stainless G65/3 gives high strength and a long lifetime. The internal geometry of the structure stops larger rocks from moving around. Smaller rocks fit between the gaps and lock the structure together while creating voids to dissipate wave energy.
A monitoring process was then implemented with the UK environment agency and the South Hams District Council. The performance of TECCO Cell was unanimously verified, and additional work was requested as soon as funds were available.
