How does Geobrugg support me as a designer / consultant in Hydraulic Engineering?

Geobrugg employs maritime and coastal experts all over the world to support you in case of questions. We collaborate closely with you in many languages. We see our role as your reliable design support. If we find that our solutions will not be suitable for a concrete project or would not add significant value, we will always be transparent.

What are the main challenges in protecting shorelines and offshore structures against hydraulic forces such as waves, currents, and storm surges?

Marine environments expose structures to continuous dynamic loading, uplift, and erosion. The key challenge is controlling hydraulic energy while maintaining long-term stability under cyclic loading. Systems such as TECCO® CELL and TECCO® TRAPUNTA address these challenges by combining mass, flexibility and controlled energy dissipation.

How do steel-wire mattress systems filled with stones work in an aquatic environment?

Systems (mattresses) made of high-tensile wire mesh filled with stones form a porous and flexible structure: the voids dissipate hydraulic energy, while the mass of the fill and the strength of the mesh stabilize the assembly and prevent the materials from escaping.

Why is high-strength duplex steel particularly suitable for maritime applications?

High-tensile duplex stainless steel, e.g. 1.4462, offers excellent resistance to chloride-induced corrosion, fatigue, and mechanical loading, for example abrasion. This makes it ideal for long-term use in seawater, splash zones, and tidal areas. All TECCO® maritime systems are designed to maintain structural integrity under aggressive marine conditions.

What advantages do flexible protection systems offer over concrete revetments or rock armour?

Our protective structures offer several major advantages. Their flexible, porous structure allows them to:

  • Conform to ground movements
They adapt to differential settlement or scouring without deteriorating or losing their effectiveness.

  • Dissipate hydraulic energy
The voids in the fill material absorb and reduce the impact of currents and waves, limiting erosion.

  • Facilitate installation
The components are lightweight when empty, can be shipped as a kit, and are quick to install.

  • Provide a durable solution
The high-strength 318 stainless steel mesh confines the stones and maintains performance over time, even in corrosive and abrasive environments.
What advantages do TECCO® marine systems offer in terms of environmental friendliness, sustainability, and service life?

TECCO® maritime Systems offer several advantages in these areas:

  • Exceptional durability
Their high-tensile stainless steel mesh, which is highly corrosion-resistant, ensures remarkable longevity in marine environments (in accordance with Eurocode 3 1993-1-4), far surpassing that of traditional solutions.

  • Natural Materials and Reduced Logistics
The system optimizes material thickness and uses local natural stone fill of standard grain size, reducing transportation costs and limiting the carbon footprint. Its lightweight design (when empty) and kit packaging greatly simplify logistics: in some cases, a single container is sufficient for several hundred square meters of installation.

  • Reduced environmental impact throughout the entire life cycle
Their long service life, adaptability to changing conditions, low maintenance requirements, and the ability to reuse or remove them contribute to a more sustainable life cycle and reduced operating costs.
How does the Geobrugg TECCO® CELL product line help me fulfil my requirements for sustainable offshore hazard mitigation?
  • Durable Stainless Steel Material
All TECCO® CELL products are manufactured from 1.4462 / AISI 318 stainless steel, an alloy that is highly resistant to seawater, chlorides, and corrosion. This ensures a long service life, even in areas exposed to sea spray or tidal action.

  • No harmful emissions into the environment
Unlike systems that use plastic or polymer materials, stainless steel does not release harmful particles into the natural environment, making it an ecosystem-friendly solution.
What is the difference between TECCO® CELL and TECCO® CELL MOBILE?

TECCO® CELL is installed in situ and is ideally suited for shoreline protection, riverbanks, and sloped revetments where geometry varies, and natural integration is desired.

TECCO® CELL MOBILE is a prefabricated system designed for hydraulically highly loaded zones, enabling rapid installation and consistent quality in areas exposed to strong currents or wave action.

How do TECCO® CELL systems prevent stone displacement under extreme hydraulic loading?

In our TECCO® CELL systems, stones are fully confined within high-strength wire cells. This creates a composite structure where hydraulic forces act on the entire mattress rather than on individual stones. Even under high wave impact or strong currents, the stones remain locked in place. Our prefabricated solutions serve as finite elements themselves, whereas TECCO® CELL is conceived as a monolithic structure along the entire installation length with integrated small compartments.

What role does mesh geometry play in the hydraulic performance of TECCO® systems?

The rhomboidal mesh geometry ensures uniform load distribution, high tensile strength in multiple directions, and stable stone confinement. Because of its diamond shape, the mesh does not elongate significantly under load, always keeping the stone infill in place. This setup is essential for maintaining hydraulic performance under repeated, multidirectional loading, which is typical in marine environments.

How is TECCO® TRAPUNTA used in ports and offshore environments?

TECCO® TRAPUNTA is a prefabricated heavy-duty mattress specifically designed for scour protection. Due to its high mass and robust construction, it is used around quay walls, offshore foundations, and port structures to protect against local erosion caused by propeller wash, waves, and currents.

How does TECCO® MANTA differ from other marine mattress systems?

TECCO® MANTA is a prefabricated, large-area, heavy-duty mattress designed for surface weighting and protection. It is particularly suited for seabed stabilization, covering large areas efficiently, and providing both mechanical protection and controlled surface shaping in offshore and nearshore applications.
