Storms and heavy rainfall events are increasing. They increasingly lead to debris flows and landslides. This can cause considerable damage to buildings and infrastructure, and not only in urban areas. In order to safely plan protection measures, it is important to understand the process as a basis for dimensioning.
In this workshop, the results of more than 25 years of research in the areas of protection against debris flows and hillslope debris flows will be presented. Several applications in Mexico will be presented and after a detailed introduction to the online design software DEBFLOW and SHALLSLIDE, you will independently solve case studies on your laptop and learn about the influence of process understanding. The event will be rounded off with a site visit of a flexible debris flow system. In addition to design, the following topics will be emphasized:

- Process understanding: basics for the design
- 1:1 field tests with debris flows and hillslope debris flows
- Protective measures: Development in collaboration with various research partners
- European approvals: The European Technical Assessment (ETA)
- Multiple loads: Evidence for an extended range of applications
- References and application examples
