Earthquake damage to a retaining wall on a residential hill property in Sumner, Christchurch required strengthening. The only access to this property was by a narrow walking track. The difficult access meant that a lightweight solution was required rather than heavy Shotcrete. The property is also located within close proximity to the coast creating the requirement for a corrosion-resistant support system.
The support system selected was TECCO® STAINLESS G65/3 with stainless P33/40 spike plates. The advantages of the stainless TECCO® system are its corrosion resistance, low visibility, uniform strength for anchor placement, greening ability, and speed of installation.
The lightweight TECCO® components and drill rig could all be helicoptered in one load and placed on the narrow footpath. The TECCO® system avoided multiple helicopter lifts and the subsequent costs that are associated with other bulky reinforcement methods.
To avoid bimetallic corrosion with the Galvanized epoxy painted bar and stainless Spike Plates, Geobrugg isolation bushes were used. The project was only 70m², but without stainless TECCO® it would have been a difficult and costly project.
