From 1987 to 2022, the Ritoque beach had receded by -1.45 meters/year, a significant erosion rate that caused problems for EFE’s infrastructure, mainly the railroad lines close to the beach.
According to field visits to the sector, of the approximately 200 linear meters of existing coastal protection with rock armour (Riprap), 50 meters were in critical condition, showing significant damage and movement of rock units, which have exposed the beach profile.
In order to stop the erosion, a reliable and non-invasive solution with optimal long-term results was required.
TECCO® CELL was chosen for its ability to effectively dissipate wave energy, preventing the movement of fine sediments and safeguarding the shoreline against further recess. This high performance is coupled with a significantly reduced carbon footprint over the service life compared to rock armour.
Furthermore, the flexibility of the modules, the ease of construction, the visual appeal, and the long service life due to high-strength, marine-grade stainless steel components contributed to the approval of this proposal.
