Installation underway for FIA homologated debris fences integral to F1 upgrades
The installation of FIA homologated debris fences has begun at the Zandvoort circuit, Netherlands, a key milestone for upgrading the track to host Formula 1 in 2020.
These debris fences are integral for the circuit to meet FIA Grade 1 standards, which from this year requires the installation of FIA homologated circuit safety equipment. Produced and installed by Swiss company Geobrugg, they are currently the only permanent debris fences in the world to have passed the new FIA homologation tests.
The solution offered by Geobrugg also helps meet the unique challenges of the circuit as there will be a number of banked sections, including the final corner which is set to be an incline of 18 degrees.
This is much greater than the nine-degree banking at Indianapolis and means that the top of the circuit will be 4.5meters higher than the bottom. Turn three of the circuit will also be banked in a parabolic curve and will enable two cars to run side-by-side.
Due to these increased technical challenges Zandvoort presents to drivers, circuit safety is of the utmost importance.
Working with leading Italian racetrack design firm Dromo Circuit Design, Geobrugg will install around 3,400 meters of permanent debris fences, 900 meters of mobile debris fences, and around 600 meters of concrete barriers across the circuit following the laying of new track asphalt.
Jarno Zaffelli, founder and designer at Dromo Circuit Design, said the design flexibility of Geobrugg’s debris fences is enabling them to work to the tight schedules required by F1 to get the circuit operational by designated deadlines.
He said: «The combination of skill and capability that Geobrugg provide, the timing and the reliability they have, and a product that can be adapted very quickly if the F1 requires it, gives us the confidence to use their solutions»
The first designs for the debris fence installation were created in October, which gave Geobrugg four weeks to produce the layout for construction, manufacture, and ship the material for installation in December.

Zandvoort joins the growing list of F1 circuits that use Geobrugg’s homologated debris fences worldwide, including Circuit of the Americas, Singapore, Monaco, Red Bull Ring, Spa-Francorchamps, Paul Ricard, Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, and Sochi Autodrom.
