Initial situation

The client planned to extend the current car park. It was identified that the new areas of the car park could be at risk of falling rocks from the quarry walls. The designer calculated that the energy of the falling blocks would require a 2 metres high 500 kJ rockfall barrier.

Description

We were approached by the client asking for advice on which would be the best barrier to use for this project.  After being presented the options he went for the RXE-500. This gave a good balance between cost, performance, and ease of installation in the expected ground conditions.

Colin Jones (Rock Engineering) were selected to install the barrier, on arriving at site it was rapidly ascertained that the ground conditions were not rock at surface as expected, but a several metres thick layer of made up ground.  Both the client and contractor were impressed with the speed we were able to mobilise to site. Within a few hours, we had a new plan in place for post bases and anchors using Geobrugg standard details enabling a rapid approval by the design engineer.

The barrier was built two weeks ahead of the schedule programmed by the contractor. They attributed this to the ease of installation combined with the clarity of the manuals along with the ease of support via telephone or site visits from Geobrugg engineers.
