Situação inicial

The rockfall problem at La Roche-Blanche came back to memory in Summer 2019 when large blocks detached from the limestone cliff above the village of La Roche-Blanche. They stopped in the nearest garden without causing much damage. Subsequently, the village ordered a survey of the rockface. The conclusion of this survey on the 22nd of December 2019 detailed the presence of a large fracture with the potential of imminent failure. A total of 1700 m³ was estimated to potential fail. It was decided to evacuate temporarily the residents living closest to the rockface, a tough decision to take just before Christmas.

Descrição

The authorities opted for a two-fold solution with a custom-made rockfall curtain just under the steep slope and a rockfall protection barrier RXE-5000 beneath it.

The construction of the rockfall curtain had just been completed, and the posts of RXE-5000 set, when most of the unstable volume, 1500 m³, collapsed in mid-February. The rockfall curtain held back most of the material, nevertheless some parts of the ringnet barrier were damaged. After replacing parts, the installation was finally completed in March 2020.
