The Kaikoura M7.8 Earthquake caused widespread damage to the road and rail corridor some 20 km North and South of the Kaikoura township. Over 40 major slips inundated the road and rail with over 750,000 m³ of material from source zones up to 500 m above sea level. The highly fractured greywacke meant frequent future shallow landslides had to be expected.
The hazard created the requirement to actively stabilise over ten sites with wire mesh and bolts to be able to reopen the State Higway and the railway below. Ongoing site identification and remediation is expected for several years
The mesh selected was Tecco® G65/3 ULTRACOATING due to its strength properties, corrosion resistance, low visibility, uniform strength for anchor placement and general ease and speed of installation. To date over 32'000 m² of ultracoated TECCO® 65/3 with galvanised P33/40 spike plates have been installed on eight sites. The mesh was generally anchored using 32 mm solid and self drilling hollow threaded bar anchors in an offset pattern.
