In the commune of La Sure en Chartreuse, the hamlet of Les Barniers is located in a boulder-fall hazard zone on the hazard map. The boulders come from the limestone escarpments on the Roche Brune slope. In 2012, a major rockfall affected the area. During this event, multi-metric blocks came to rest in the immediate vicinity of homes.
In 2019, the commune, alerted by a resident, reported that a 3-ton block had been stopped by trees. After this, the commune took steps to carry out protection work to secure the homes in the Barniers hamlet.
A study resulted in the dimensioning of 250 linear meters of rockfall protection barriers.
This system, divided into two linear sections of 120 meters and 130 meters, consists of dynamic barriers with a capacity of 3,000 kJ. These barriers are CE certified and can intercept and stop boulders of up to 5 m³.
The GBE-3000A barrier in La Sure en Chartreuse features modular posts, as well as climbing aids.
