Initial situation

Following the installation of a 5 metres high GBE-500A rockfall barrier at the Port of Dover in 2020, Geobrugg has been working closely with the Port and their chosen designer to discuss the ongoing inspection and maintenance of the rockfall fence.

Due to the coastal nature of the site, the corrosivity of the atmosphere is a key factor in deciding on an inspection and maintenance strategy for steel protection systems. The Port has a yearly inspection strategy in place of both the barrier and the chalk cliff face, the first of these inspections was carried out in November 2022 by the Port's chosen design engineer (Jubb).

Description

Geobrugg introduced the Geobrugg GUARD to both the Port and the designer (Jubb) and highlighted the potential for the corrosion data it provides to be used to undertake more accurate lifetime calculations moving forward.

This allows for maintenance of the barrier to become more predictive as appose to reactive and forms part of the ongoing maintenance strategy moving forward. The corrosion data also has wider useage for any further design of protection systems on site which might occur.

The rockfall detection feature of the GUARD provides 24-hour-a-day monitoring to the Port and would notify users within minutes should there be a rockfall which activates the barrier.

Geobrugg installed one GUARD on site in November 2022.
