The scenic new mountain highway westwards from Khor Fakkan is crossing several Wadis (valleys). Despite the rather arid climate, heavy annual rainfalls are likely to cause debris flows and land- or mudslides along the Wadis.
A solution was necessary to prevent debris flows from blocking the drainage culverts and, even worse, overflow the newly constructed highway.
Two 6 meters high VX flexible debris flow barriers
The debris flow barriers were designed using the DEBFLOW online tool in close collaboration with the clients engineering team. The expected impact loads (kN/m²) were calculated based on geology, topography, and other decisive boundary conditions.
In Mai 2019, one of the flexible debris flow barriers underwent the most severe proof: Heavy rainfall triggered several debris flows along the various Wadi's. One of them hit the recently completed barrier which remained undamaged. After an excavator had removed the debris material, the barrier was ready again for the next thunderstorms.
