The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) railroad line and the cantonal road between Lugano and Melide are confronted with frequent rockfall from the rock faces of Monte Salvatore, which are up to 600 m high. Similar to the safety measures taken in 2016, this latest project also aimed to protect these important traffic routes on Lake Lugano from rockfall.
This project included the installation of 16 new rockfall barriers with a total length of approx. 1'300 meters. Moreover, about 500 meters of existing barriers were reinforced.
The newly installed RXE-type barriers have different absorption energies ranging from 500 to 5'000 kJ. The last ones, with a height of 9 meters, hold the record for the highest post in Switzerland. In addition, around 10'000 m² of TECCO G65/3 mesh was installed.
Construction work began in the spring of 2021 and ended in mid-2023.
