Sytuacja początkowa

The Molo Trieste at the port of Piombino has an evident excavation phenomenon at the foot of the quay due to erosion induced by the casting of the ferry’s propulsion propellers. This leads to instability of the infrastructure, with impacts on human safety and the economy if maritime operations are disrupted.

Opis zastosowanego rozwiazania

In a pilot project, 26 Trapuntas* were installed to prevent further erosion and validate the solution.

In the project's initial phase, netting rolls were delivered to make the metal framework. Once the material for filling arrived, construction of the Trapuntas began. With the use of a bobcat (functioning like a communication submarine drone), a semi-mobile crane, and the assistance of experienced divers, the first modules were laid on the seabed in record time, successfully setting a precedent for the underwater installation of Trapuntas. This meant less downtime and a sustainable use of the harbor.

This project is monitored regularly to allow the punctual measurement of every possible displacement. At the end of 2025, after three measurements, the results indicate a stable installation, and the structure's geometry does not exhibit modifications due to induced sediments.

Check our video displaying the installation at the Port of Piombino.

*) Trapunta is Italian and means quilt.
