Protection of infrastructure open mining Kiruna

Infrastructure protection in mining

08 July 2016

For the open iron ore mine in Svappavaara, which lies southeast of Kiruna in the north of Sweden, the mine operator Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB) regularly conducts blasting. Five buildings with operationally relevant infrastructure required protection against falling rocks - persons, naturally, are evacuated in these cases.

Sweco built the steel scaffoldings for the buildings which house particularly relevant infrastructure. On top of these our nets MAXX S4-130 and ROMBO G80/4 were installed in two layers. They come along with the largest brakes: U300-rod brakes with a capacity of 3,000 kJ. The installation of 3,400 m² protected area was completed in six weeks.
