In July 2023, severe storms over the Davos countryside caused considerable storm damage in the Zügenschlucht (Zügen Gorge). Numerous trees were uprooted, resulting in the entire tree population being felled by the wind over an area of around six hectares.

Due to the lack of forest cover, this section of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) was suddenly at acute risk from sliding snow and small avalanches from the steep slope above.

To ensure the RhB line remains safe during the winter of 2023/2024, eleven rows of snow nets (TECCO® G80/4) were installed in the Schmelzboden area starting in autumn 2023. The nets are 1.2 meters high and span a total length of 285 meters. They provide long-term protection for the railway line against gliding snow and avalanches.

The storm also severely damaged an existing rockfall protection net. To maintain safety, the damaged net and two heavily worn palisades were replaced with a new protection system. The new rockfall protection net meets the latest technical standards, is 31 meters long, 5 meters high, and can absorb energy of up to 2,000 kJ. This ensures the railway line is reliably protected against rock and boulder impacts.
