The D1 state road near Rastoke village is important because it connects central Croatia with Lika and Dalmatia and serves as a main tourist route toward Plitvice Lake. For the town of Slunj and nearby settlements, it is essential for daily traffic, supply routes, and tourism development. Protecting this road from rockfall is crucial because traffic interruptions threaten public safety, can isolate the local population, and cause significant economic losses due to disruptions on one of the country’s key inland–coastal transport corridors.
Limestone and Dolomite rock
The solution included four GBE-A rockfall barriers with an energy capacity of 100 kJ (2.5 meters high, with lengths of 10, 20 and 30 meters), while the steep rock slope was additionally secured with SPIDER S3-130 mesh over an area of 3,710 m² with a special twist on top, so-called SPIDER Interception Apron (mini barrier solution).
