Situation de départ

Malchej Ghat is a mountain pass nestled in the lofty rugged hills of the Western Ghat range in the Thane district of Maharashtra, India. It is home to hundreds of different kinds of flora and fauna, including a variety of birds such as quail, rails, crakes, flamingos and cuckoos. The area is notorious for landslide during monsoons. Malchej Ghat is situated in the Pune district, 160 Km from Mumbai and 130 km from Pune.

National Highway 222 connecting the states of Maharashtra and Telangana passes Malchej Ghat. The project location at km 92.200 is also a tourist site with a famous waterfall and a pilgrimage site with an old temple. Because of frequent rock falls during the monsoon season, the state highway is often closed for several days which severely affects the day to day life of the nearby cities. During a rockfall event in 2013, boulders weighing around 5 tons rolled down the slope and damaged vehicles and injured people in the temple area.

Description

The Public Works Department at Thane has the responsibility of maintaining the road and approached Geobrugg India to install rockfall mitigation. Geobrugg installed a QUAROX® net over a layer of DELTAX® mesh along the nearly vertical slope that rises nearly 120 m from the road level. The net is held in place with the support of 50 fully grouted 2 m long anchors (28 mm diameter). The complete work was carried out with the help of rope access technicians.
