Prévention des avalanches - Geisshorn-Arensa snow nets 2012

Overview of the Geisshorn snow nets covered partially by snow, directly under the rockface

Prévention des avalanches - Geisshorn-Arensa snow nets 2012

Snow nets are installation friendly thus allow a considerable reduction of helicopter hours

Modular and lightweight structure allows fast and easy installation. All elements were pre-assembled in the valley first

Pressure plates are a perfect solution for areas with permafrost since they do not require a concrete foundation with anchoring. The picture shows the retaining ropes. Such scheme allows perfect plate positioning and further ground movements

Thanks to modular structure snow nets perfectly follow irregular terrain profile. Short sections follow the structure of the ground

Overview of snow nets installed directly under the rockface. Here rockfall capacity is a must and an enormous advantage of Geobrugg's flexible snow net structures

Situation de départ

In winter 1999 (well remembered in the Alps for extraordinary snowfall and avalanches) National Road 28, to the ski resorts of Klosters and Davos, had to be closed. The inital location of those avalanches was the perimeter of this project.

Description

To ensure that avalanches of such scale and influence would not emerge from the Geisshorn mountain, the Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) and the Forest and Natural Hazards Office of the canton Grison, (AWN) entrusted the engineering company of Tur GmbH, to plan a mitigation solution. Due to its location, under the rockface where  little rockfall is possible, Tur GmbH decided to use Snow Nets rather than rigid steel structures. This led to the installation of nearly 2000 [m] of Geobrugg avalanche protection barriers (so called Snow Nets).
