Rapid gravity mass flows pose a threat to settlements and infrastructure and limit the use of land on all continents of the world. In mountainous regions, these natural hazards include snow avalanches, slush- and debris flows, rockfall and landslides. People in modern societies are becoming more concerned with safety, and authorities strive to ensure the safety of settlements, traffic lines and society in general with hazard zoning, planning of settlements, and construction and management of protection measures. The design of permanent protection measures has become more demanding and expensive in recent years due to high safety demands leading to the consideration of temporary protection measures or relocation of settlements as well.
The symposium seeks to bring together scientists, engineers, architects and representatives of local and central authorities to discuss the state of the art of mitigation measures against snow avalanches and other rapid gravity mass flows and the challenges that lie ahead in the management of those natural hazards.
The International Symposium on Mitigation Measures against Snow Avalanches and Other Rapid Gravity Mass Flows will be held in Siglufjörður, north Iceland, from April 3rd to April 5th, 2019, by the Association of Chartered Engineers in Iceland (VFI).

The 8th conference of CGS is organized as an international geotechnical conference sponsored by the ISRM as an „ISRM Specialized Conference“.
Karst poses special challenges to engineers in a significant part of Croatia, Europe and World and we dedicate this conference primarily to the karst, although articles on other topics in geology, geotechnics, geotechnical engineering etc. are also welcome. We will highlight the first contributions of great Karl Terzaghi, who started his rich career in the Croatian karst, in Gacko polje, with lecture KARL TERZAGHI AND CROATIAN KARST 110 YEARS AGO. The topic of the congress has arisen from a whole range of new life requirements. Let's just mention some. By spreading the settlements at the bottom of the high cliffs, there is a need for a high-quality protection against the rockfalls. Because of the need to build garages in urban areas, and to save valuable resources on the surface for other purposes, the coastal towns descend underground into the area of the karst. The construction of the foundations of large bridges and viaducts in the coastal zone creates a challenge in the transfer of concentrated loads int karst characterized by a number of weaknesses (karst sinkholes, caverns, ...). The need for the construction of high speed roads in the coastal zone of the Republic of Croatia implicates excavations of long tunnels, which again is threat in the karst area.

The Regional Laboratory of Civil Engineering – LREC - announces the International Workshop on NATURAL HAZARDS - NatHaz19 - under the theme “Hydrological Risks”, to be held in Lajes do Pico village, in Pico island (Azores), on the 9th and 10th of May 2019.
The Workshop will offer a good opportunity for a forum on several issues related with natural hazards, particularly about hydrological risks and hazards, in this second edition.
Due to its tectonic and volcanic environment, the Azores region is affect by most of all natural hazards, namely, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, floods, costal erosion, etc. So, it is the perfect place where professionals in these areas can discuss their problems. And it will be a great opportunity to closely contact the local reality, in what concerns the natural risks that can affect that island and to visit several peculiar geological/volcanological aspects.
It will also provide an excellent occasion to enjoy the beautiful landscape of Pico Island. The beauty given by the volcanic nature of Azores islands, its geographical, cultural and gastronomical specificities and the hospitality of the Azorean people, may also be a good justification for combining the technical and scientific interest with the touristic aspects and take advantage of this excellent opportunity to visit the Azores, particularly the so-called “Triangle” (Pico Island and its nearest islands, Faial and S. Jorge).

The Ninth International Conference on Deep and High Stress Mining (Deep Mining 2019) will be held at the Misty Hills Conference Centre, Muldersdrift, Johannesburg on 24 and 25 June 2019. Conferences in this series have previously been hosted in Australia, South Africa, Canada, and Chile. Around the world, mines are getting deeper and the challenges of stress damage, squeezing ground, and rockbursts are everpresent and increasing. Mining methods and support systems have evolved slowly to improve the management of excavation damage and safety of personnel, but damage still occurs and personnel are injured. Techniques for modelling and monitoring have been adapted and enhanced to help us understand rock mass behaviour under high stress. Many efficacious dynamic support products have been developed, but our understanding of the demand and capacity of support systems remains uncertain.
