Situación inicial

In 2020, a significant landslide occurred on the West Highland Line, primarily caused by water runoff through the hillside. The landslide blocked the railway, forcing a full route closure while repairs were undertaken.

Given the ongoing risk posed by heavy and persistent rainfall, the site conditions were closely monitored. As part of the long-term protection strategy, a 45-metre SL-150 barrier was installed to mitigate the impact on the railway from further landslips.

Descripción

Working in collaboration with contractor QTS and designer Fairhurst, a 45-metre barrier solution was designed for Network Rail. Post spacing varies between 7 and 8 metres to suit the local topography.

We supported the project by supplying the barrier system and contributing technical input during the design and installation phases. Preserving the surrounding landscape was a key consideration; accordingly, the upslope anchor layout at the far end of the barrier was adapted to minimise environmental impact and reduce disruption during installation.

After the barrier installation, we carried out an in-house sign-off process called a CONSIS inspection to ensure the project met our rigorous quality and safety standards.

Network Rail made it clear that this sign-off was a critical part of the project’s delivery, reflecting their commitment to quality assurance and the successful delivery of the solution.
