The rockfall protection structure is located in the Calmont wine-growing region in Rhineland-Palatinate, between Ediger-Eller and Bremm. The B49 runs at the foot of the steep slope. Rockfall barriers and mesh fencing have already been installed along the route.
The project closes another gap in rockfall protection. This case study was developed as part of a research project to test BIM methodology in collaboration with w&p geoprojekt GmbH and TRIGIS.
Funded by the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (mFUND).
The study area is located in the Rhenish Slate Mountains. In the stabilized area, clayey and quartzite layers alternate. To assess stability, the schistosity and the two main joint sets were mapped. In the critical area, the joints form a line of joint intersection, creating a risk of rock blocks and rock piles sliding.
Sustainability is an important issue in construction projects. For this reason, TECCO® STAINLESS was used, and a life-cycle analysis was conducted as part of a master’s thesis. For the project owner, who will operate the road for decades or even centuries, the total costs over the structures' planned service life are crucial. Using TECCO® STAINLESS demonstrated that, even under less corrosive conditions, the total cost of ownership (TCO) is lower.
