Viaduc du rocher de Larce - RN5

Rockfall Protection - Viaduc du rocher de Larce - RN5 2024

Excellent visual integration of the protection system with 5,000 m² mesh

Rockfall Protection - Viaduc du rocher de Larce - RN5 2024

The system's adaptability means that posts can be positioned on ridges with center-to-center distances of up to 16 m, reducing the number of posts and anchors required

Rockfall Protection - Viaduc du rocher de Larce - RN5 2024

5,000 m² of protection with excellent visual integration of the system. Thanks to the use of high-tensile steel wire mesh, the number of posts could be reduced, and energy dissipators were not necessary.

Initial situation

The Morez Viaduct on the RN5 runs for several hundred meters along the Larce rock face. This predominantly rocky slope produces numerous boulder and rock fall events, which are currently channeled and accumulated in aging structures that are inadequate for the phenomena involved (mesh barriers, rope ladders, etc.).

Description

Geobrugg supplied a rockfall attenuator that met several criteria. A study of the area's rockfall hazards provided the input data allowing the use of the ATTERO dimensioning software.

Thanks to the solution’s adaptability and low visual impact, it is perfectly integrated into the viaduct. This attenuator’s optimized composition, with no energy dissipation system (brake), will minimize the need for maintenance intervention.
