Initial situation

Rockfalls endangered the Sissach-Eptingen section of the freeway, so the Swiss Federal Roads Office ASTRA commissioned a maintenance project.

Description

The measures included rock cleaning, net covers, the installation of rockfall protection structures, the permanent tie-back of rock sections and the construction of concrete support piers.

To ensure the safety of road users, three different rockfall barriers with a total length of around 500 meters were installed. Work began at the end of June 2022 with nighttime work above both portals of the Oberburg Tunnel. One lane had to be closed to traffic at a time.
