Initial situation

San Alfonso, located at the brim of the metropolitan area of Santiago de Chile, is affected by landslides every year. Due to climate change and different atmospheric rivers that have affected the region in recent years, these events have become more common and recurrent.

In 2021, meteorological events activated different streams in the San Alfonso region (San José de Maipo), triggering a series of floods that affected the area’s residents.

These floods negatively affected the community, road infrastructure and services. The water works department requested installing a system to mitigate future floods of this extent.

Description

Considering the number of activated streams, the amount of material dragged by the debris flow and the size of these streams, it was decided to install ten VX140-type barriers in five different streams.
